18-25? Join Our Youth Council!
AbleChildAfrica is excited to be expanding our Youth Council; a like-minded group of young people who want to play an active role in supporting our vision to create a world where all children with disabilities are able to fulfil their potential. Now moving into its second year, the Youth Council is seeking new members to drive their youth-led strategy forward and support AbleChildAfrica in achieving its vision.
Disabled children across Africa are some of the most disadvantaged in the world with only 2% going to school. As world leaders have adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes commitment to inclusive and quality education for all, there is a need for a strong youth voice in the UK to fight for the rights of disabled children in Africa, making sure our leaders deliver on their promises.
As a growing organisation, we also recognise the contribution young people can bring to raise awareness of our work, to fundraise for new projects and share new ideas.
Who should apply?
- Young people with a wide range of skills and interests including research, public speaking, fundraising, social media and campaigning to support the delivery of core Youth Council activities
- Young people with a keen interest and passion for development issues, particularly child rights, disability rights and/or inclusion
- We are currently seeking members based in London, although we welcome applications from across the United Kingdom
- We particularly encourage those with lived experience of disability and/or from African Diaspora to apply
- To be eligible, you must be aged between 18-25 years old at the point of application
What will it involve?
Members of our Youth Council commit to volunteer 1-2 days per month from home (e.g. during evenings/weekends), attend 4-5 full-day face-to-face meetings in London over the course of a year (reasonable travel expenses are covered) and engage in monthly Youth Council Skype meetings. Youth Council members may also take up elected leadership posts, each of which oversees a number of exciting Council responsibilities. Additional days may also be necessary to facilitate opportunities for members, including trainings or attendance at awareness raising/advocacy events.
Successful candidates will be offered an initial one year posting with the possibility of extension. The Youth Council is made up of up to 8 members, and will be coordinated by our Programmes & Advocacy Assistant, Anthony Ford-Shubrook, with additional support from the AbleChildAfrica Programmes team.
What are the benefits?
Being a member of the Youth Council is a unique opportunity to work with a leading international development organisation, learning about all aspects of our work from advocacy to programmes to fundraising. As a member of the Youth Council, you will gain experience designing and running events, projects and campaigns – developing your existing skills and gaining new ones from our team and fellow Council members. The Youth Council is truly youth-led – meaning members who demonstrate a strong level of commitment and engagement will gain the most from their role!
